Uppsteyt designers

The Uppsteyt collection is designed by a father and daughter; Jón Snorri Sigurðsson and Berglind Snorra. Their collaboration is characterized by a constant development of new ideas through their creative imagination and experience. As a team, Jón Snorri and Berglind complement each other; he is a mature renowned artist and she is a young daring designer.  Exposed to the pure and powerful Icelandic nature they frequently incorporate elements such as ice, fire and water into their design. They have worked together for many years and form an innovative and dynamic design team.

Jón Snorri Sigurðsson started working as an apprentice at Jens ehf., one of Iceland’s most renowned goldsmith workshops, in 1966.  Today, he is engaged as the company’s senior artist and jeweller.
In 1998 Snorri founded Smak ehf. in cooperation with designers such as Michael Yong. Smak is a design studio that specializes in working directly with international designers in producing jewelry and gift products.

Snorri has held solo exhibitions in Iceland and at EFTA’s headquarters in Brussel and he has participated in numerous joint exhibitions abroad. Several heads of state and institutions in Europe and the USA have been presented with his jewelry and sculptures.
Snorri has received much recognition throughout his carrier, he was for example nominated for the Award for Culture and Art by DV (the Daily Paper), for his design of the prize sculptures and the medals awarded at the World Championship Handball Games in 1995.

Berglind Snorra graduated with a degree in gold and silver design in 2003. During 2004-2007, Berglind accomplished a BA (Honours) degree in Furniture Design and Related Products at Sheffield Hallam University in England.

In 2006, Berglind lived in Prague and studied at the Academy of Arts and Design institution. Later that year, she received recognition for a light she designed which was entered into a design competition held by Reykjavik Energy.

In 2007 Berglind worked at one of the leading international design companies in London, Established & Sons.  Her designs are powerful and bold and are characterized by strong forms and modern style. Today she is one of the most prominent designers at Jens ehf. and Uppsteyt.
